Are you completly satisfied about your last work?
Not completely, but I am happy with the new songs and the direction the band is taking towards doing more original material. Overall, I like the sound of the new CD. The album is very dark, though, and at times I wish it weren't. Still, that's what I had to work with as I was writing. I just don't always want to take responsibility for it!!
Wich are the most important ispiration for doing this new album?
Punk, blues and gospel. Hendrix and Coltrane gave me inspiration with their determination to do something new that had a spiritual base. Any music with an experimental spirit; jazz musicians like Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, and the great drummers Rashied Ali and Elvin Jones. Skip James; I love his ornery, brilliant spirit, and the darkness of his songs, to say nothing of the beauty of his music. No that our CD sounds like any of these people, but they inspire me. Other inspirations: The King James translation of The New Testament, with its beautiful language. William Faulkner. Drums - I've fallen in love with drums, and wanting to hear more and more of them led to the new CD having a more aggressive sound than the first one.
Is There some others artists that you think important to reccomend us?
I love the "Milk Eyed Mender" by Joanna Newsom. She plays the harp - the concert harp, not harmonica - and is a great lyricist and utterly unique in her own very musical way.
Mary Gauthier, a singer-songwriter based in Nashville. Clear-eyed realism from an autobiographical point of view. I have a lot of respect for her writing, and think her work has great integrity.
Check out the "Amazing Grace" CD by Mississippi Fred McDowell, on the Testament label. It's a recording of McDowell playing with his his church group - six or eight singers, one of whom is his wife - and is very moving.
Are there some others projects for the your future?
I have a few months off, and I'm using my time to write and do some reading. Everything is feeling a bit experimental; I have no idea how the next CD will sound. I may try to start working with two drummers, so that could factor in. But I'm not sure.
Is there something in your album that you don't like enough?
I wish that we'd done a few quieter songs. I think it would round out the album
