Are you completely satisfied about your last work?
I am not sure if an artist is ever completely satisfied. If we were, I think we’d all quit. It’s the addiction to the audience and the desire to create great songs that drives EKe. What happens in the studio is a direct result of that. I do think the reality of monday morning sounds the way we wanted it to. We wanted a very earthy-rootsy-70’s type of recording, and that is what we got.
What are the most important inspirations for doing this new album?
That is the really weird thing about this band, collectively we do not share any influences. My (Eric’s) inspirations are all songwriters that turn unique phrases and have powerful voices—Stevie, Harris, Ryan Adams, Jay Farrar, Edwin McCain, Greg Allman, etc. The rest of the band seems to be more into great bands, more about the unity of sound that is generated from an ensemble.
Is There some others artists that you think important to
recommend?
Absolutely, we have played with some amazing artists over the years. My first would be my major influence, Stevie Harris. He is out of Oakland, CA, and has the most amazing voice I have ever heard. You may also want to check out Berkley-Hart out of San Diego, CA, some fantastic songwriting. From the Lou’ (St. Louis), I’d have to recommend any project that involved Donald Williams (the getaway cars, Suggar Daddy, Citizen Dane). He just makes bands more exciting. Also, for fans of Jam Rock, it doesn’t get any better than Madahoochi. Jupiter Jazz, which does Hip-Hop and Spoken Word over live instrumentation, is awesome. And, staying true to that Alt-Country vibe, Brain Regiment is definitely worth a listen. Actually, there are a bunch of groups I could recommend, probably too many for this interview.
Are there some others projects in your future?
Yeah, there will definitely be another recording in the future. We are actually competing in the final round of the Battle of the Bands this Thursday. If we win that, we win some recording money, so that would help. But one way or another, we are heading into the studio this winter. I think I have turned out 5 new tunes and want to revisit some older
ones.
Is there something in your album that you don't like
enough?
If anything, I’d say the harmonies. I didn’t really spend enough time on them. We did them at the end of the recording, and I didn’t even really want to do single voice harmonies, and that is kind of what they sound like to me—rushed and me singing with me. They are tired and lack placement. I would have preferred to have someone else sing them.
