David Bridie - Hotel Radio
2003 Emi

Are you completly satisfied about your last work?
I don’t think you are ever 100% completely satisfied as an artist.Having said that, I wanted to make an album that travelled some different terrain from Act o free Choice and I wanted to work with (collaborate) some different artists both of which I managed to achieve. My record company (EMI) wanted the tempos lifted a bit compared to the first album and 100 Flowers and Looking after oursleves are attempts at this.I stand by all the songs, and im very happy with the depth of texture on the record ,the mix of orchetsra and rhythm loops and the role that nick littlemore played on the record. For me ,The Tender Trap , Wires ,Hotel radio , nation(of the heartless kind) ,Blue Black Sky and Stumble Away are as good as any songs Ive ever recorded or written.Hotel Radio stands as a good bookend to Act of Free Choice
Wich are the most important ispiration for doing this new album?
the inspirations for this album were a.MUSICALLY....to create atmosphere and mood and an innovative approach to sound and studio ,to create a sound that melded together analogue and digital, found sounds with musical sounds, loops with real played rhythms, both traditional rock instruments ie drums, bass, guitar and keyboards with the sounds of the orchestra and other less traditional rock instrumenst such as the pump organ9wires),ukelele (on a day like this)mezzo soprano vocals(nation) ,using the voice as an instrument as well as a deliverer of the words...to create music and sound that is multi layered so that when you hear it for the 10th time the listener would still be able to discover sounds/elements they hadn’t heard before...to create a sound that would last and was not tied to flavours of the day too much , to combine the innovations that pro tools and digital studio technology can offer with the warmth and approach that tape gives...LYRICALLY..to move away from verse chorus, ballad style narrative lyrics, using images that worked with metaphors of sound to give off the meaning of the song...to document recent events in Australian social life...this government’s mean spirited approach to refugees and the war in Iraq (nation, looking after ourselves, safety haven) ,plus the obvious lyrical instrumenst I deal with ..the stuff of human condition, barracading oneself away from the mess of urban living...just trying to write something that has a bit of soul!
Is There some others artists that you think important to reccomend us?
Australian artists-The Blackeyed Susans,Rob Snarski and Dan Luscombe’s record..., machine translations , architecture in helsinki, all india radio, hi pass filter , the waifs , these are all interesting young australian bands who have put out good records in the past year.....Pnau is nick Littlemore’s dance act...Nick produced my record and is very talented
I have been listening to a lot of Arvo part and Boards of Canada of late...love the texture and sound of these records am hoping to put out on my own label a small series of Papua new guinean records soon...George Telek (who I produced a cd for real world records a few years back ...he has a new one called amette which we are mixing now,a band called Black Paradise from west papua and william takaku from bougainville...these are all interesting records from a region of the world that is underexposed there is a compilation cd called Sound of The Morning Star which I would recommend to all...a series of soundscapes/collaborations between australian artists...you can buy it on the net...www.mana.com.au

Are there some others projects for the your future?
a new my friend the chocolate cake compilation cd is being released next year which we are presently recording a couple of new tracks for , a short french film by Bruno Andoque I am composing for presently , am also putting together the film portions of the DVDs for both act of free choice and hotel radio which will come out ij April...all the songs have films especially made for them by a number of both experienced and student film makers...am very proud of these
Is there something in your album that you don't like enough?
the vocal levels on come around and on a day like this are a bitlower than they should be...in a perfect world I would have had two more slower tracks on and one less up tempo track, but EMI reckon radio doesn’t play slow melancholy and in a market like australia it can be difficult...for the interntional release next year I might change the track order
