Brilliant Mistakes - Dumb Luck

Are you completly satisfied about your last work?
Very satisfied. We came into the studio with a real idea of what we wanted which was a sound that would showcase the songs as well as a sound that would be clearly identifiable with the band. Our first record which we were also very happy with dabbled in many styles and was more eclectic, but Dumb Luck, our second album, had a more focused sound which makes it a more mature record in my mind.
Wich are the most important ispiration for doing this new album?
I am mostly inspired by great songwriting and interesting and clever lyrics; I am a big fan of bands like the Jayhawks and Wilco, as well as songwriters like Neil Finn of Crowded House, Squeeze, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello. Erik and I both aspire to write songs that we are ourselves would want to listen to. We hope we have succeeded. Beyond my basic musical inspirations I find the whole process of writing and arranging with a band, and then putting what we've come up with on tape to be my real inspiration. I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing. If it was as financially rewarding as it is personally rewarding I would be a rich man.
Is There some others artists that you think important to reccomend us?
Besides the names I mentioned above, I would also recommend Aimee Mann, Mike Viola and The Candy Butchers, Marshall Crenshaw, and one of my favorite songwriters of all Ron Sexsmith. I'm sure Erik will have a few names to add to my list. We have links to many of these artists on our own site

Are there some others projects for the your future?
Hopefully we will have many. We are still trying to get American and international distribution for Dumb Luck and we hope to make more records in the future. Right now we are actually re-mixing and re-mastering our first five-song EP that we made before our first record All Hands and the Cook. This will be available on our website sometime in the Winter; we will be practically giving it away.
Is there something in your album that you don't like
enough?
No regrets; there is nothing except the little thing here and there which every musician finds when listening to their own music. Overall I am very happy with the production and the performances. I think in the future if we make more records it will be interesting to play with the
formula a little bit and be more adventurous with the way we present songs, and be more adventurous with the actual songs that we choose to record, in other words to do more material stuff that might seem too moody or dark. I think two of the best songs on the album are the darkest and moodiest, Feed the Elephant and Line of Battle, where we do this to a degree. It would be interesting if we can take that further and approach every song with a completely unique arrangement and be more creative in the studio (which can be difficult if you are working with a small budget.
